What are the different types of crimes and how are they categorized?

There are two primary categories of criminal charges.  They consist of Felony and Misdemeanor.  Additionally, there are some Traffic charges that are also considered criminal.

A felony is any criminal offense that is punishable under Florida laws (or that would be punishable if committed in Florida) by death or imprisonment in a state penitentiary.

A misdemeanor is a violation of the law, less serious than a felony offense.  They are punishable by fine, probation and/or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year, as opposed to state prison on a felony charge.
